Level 2: IP Strategy and Application

Level 2 – IP Strategy and Application is a series of special topics, ranging from IP strategy and commercialization to IP best practices for inventors and entrepreneurs.

All learners must complete Level 1 – IP Foundations before beginning Level 2.

TOPIC 1 – UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO STARTUP GUIDE

This training consists of four modules to provide a broad overview of steps to consider when deciding to become an entrepreneur, creating a startup company, licensing IP assets and raising funding. It also covers a summary of strategies and practices for managing the licensed IP and building the startup’s IP portfolio. (Time commitment: approximately 2 hours.)

  • Module 1 – Deciding to Create a Startup
  • Module 2 – Founding a startup based on Research IP
  • Module 3 – Licensing and Financing  
  • Module 4 – After the License Deal
  • Case Study

Strongly recommended for founders of startup companies that leverage intellectual property, research and deep technology.

Level 2 topics are now open to all University of Toronto students, faculty, staff, and alumni who have completed Level 1. To register for Level 2, Topic 1 – University of Toronto Startup Guide, complete the form at the link below.

TOPIC 2 – UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO INVENTOR’S GUIDE

This training consists of two modules to introduce learners to the University of Toronto’s IP policy for inventions created at the university and the process for protecting IP and subsequent commercialization. (Time commitment: approximately 2 hours)

  • Module 1 – Introduction to UofT’s Inventions Policy
  • Module 2 – Technology Transfer Process Lifecycle
    • 2.1 Introduction to Technology Transfer Process
    • 2.2 Invention Disclosures, Assessments, and IP Protection (Patents)
    • 2.3 Marketing and Licensing of U of T IP
    • 2.4 Commercialization and Revenue Sharing of U of T IP
  • Case Study

Strongly recommended for students and researchers with intellectual property that might value, be it in a startup, licensed to a corporation, etc.

MORE INFORMATION

The modules of this online program will be augmented with optional lectures, workshops and presentations outside of this training as part of a general IP education program at the University of Toronto.  Participation in these events is highly encouraged but not required for completion of the program.

Current students: successful completion of each topic will be recognized on a student’s Co-Curricular Record. Successful completion of multiple Level 2 Topics will result in multiple CCR credentials.

For those external to the University of Toronto community, Level 2 is not available at this time.
