Join the Toronto Music Entrepreneurship Exchange and Hart House for a panel discussion on the exciting prospects and challenges that AI presents to musicians and the creative industry. This session, featuring Daniel Field (Imaginary North) and Vanese Smith (Loop Sessions Toronto), will consider the role of independent artists in a rapidly changing music sector. Moderated by Marco Adamović (Hart House, University of Toronto)

Vanese Smith is a sound and visual artist, mentor, and educator. Under the alias Pursuit Grooves, she has released over 16 albums and EPs and featured on more than 20 releases and compilations. She creates sonically adventurous electronic (mostly) instrumental music ranging from cinematic, to experimental, to uptempo, and has performed at festivals and theatres across Europe, Canada, Japan, Australia and more.

She co-founded Loop Sessions Toronto in 2019, an event programming collective that focuses on music education, sampling culture, and electronic production supported by Toronto Arts Council and Canada Council for the Arts. She has also led workshops and given talks for numerous organizations and universities including Queen’s University, University of Toronto, and Toronto Metropolitan University. Vanese has been featured in Musicworks Magazine, NOW, Exclaim, Bandcamp, and Wax Poetics Japan.

Daniel Field 

Daniel Field (he/him) is a Toronto-based musician, teacher, and father of three. He records predominantly under the moniker Kilometre Club, where he creates high concept ambient and electronic music, having released prolifically under the name since 2020. In 2024 alone, he released six different albums and amassed over 24 million streams across platforms. His music has been released independently as well as with a variety of small international labels. In 2022, Daniel founded the ambient label Imaginary North, which has shared over 50 releases since its inception. Imaginary North has been able to work with local, national and international musicians, releasing music digitally and on cassette. Two particular releases, the 24-hour-long Today Until Tomorrow, and the longform collection The Longest Time, were compiled as charity compilations benefitting Music Declares Emergency. Most recently, the label has begun a monthly live residency called Ambient Afternoon at renowned Toronto venue Standard Time. Outside of music, Daniel teaches grade 7 in Richmond Hill. 

Marco Adamović is an educator and cultural producer. As an educator, Marco strives to facilitate positive and healthy environments for creativity, community, and collaboration to thrive. As a cultural producer, he is a multi-instrumentalist, beatmaker, songwriter, and organizer of a wide range of events and programs, often working under the alias Vic Adamo. He is the creator and host of Producers’ Circle, and works with people, technology, and (mostly) good ideas. His family emigrated to Turtle Island in the 1970s from the former Yugoslavia. Marco is a graduate of the Mille Rotman Shime Academic Bridging Program, an alumnus of Katimavik, and holds an M.Ed in Leadership, Adult, and Higher Education from the University of Toronto. He is currently pursuing a PhD in Curriculum, Teaching and Learning, at the University of Toronto, research creative communities.
