Level 2 – IP Strategy and Application is a series of special topics, ranging from IP strategy and commercialization to IP best practices for inventors and entrepreneurs.

All learners must complete Level 1 – IP Foundations before beginning Level 2.

Topic 1 – University of Toronto startup guide

This training consists of four modules providing an overview of steps to consider when deciding to become an entrepreneur, create a startup company, license IP assets and raise funding. It also covers a summary of strategies and practices for managing the licensed IP and building the startup’s IP portfolio. (Time commitment: approximately 2 hours.)

  • Module 4 – After the License Deal

Strongly recommended for founders of startup companies that leverage intellectual property, research and deep technology.

Topic 2 – University of Toronto inventor’s guide

This training consists of two modules to introduce learners to the University of Toronto’s IP policy for inventions created at the university and the process for protecting IP and subsequent commercialization. (Time commitment: approximately 2 hours)

  • Module 2 – Technology Transfer Process Lifecycle
    • 2.1 Introduction to Technology Transfer Process
    • 2.2 Invention Disclosures, Assessments, and IP Protection (Patents)
    • 2.3 Marketing and Licensing of U of T IP
    • 2.4 Commercialization and Revenue Sharing of U of T IP
  • Case Study

Strongly recommended for students and researchers with intellectual property that might value, be it in a startup, licensed to a corporation, etc.

This online program will be supplemented by optional workshops and events outside of this training as part of a general IP education program at the University of Toronto. Participation in these events is highly encouraged but not required for completion of the program.
