Brad Katsuyama, the hero of the bestselling book Flash Boys, has made his name by shaking up Wall Street. He exposed the unfair advantage of current high-speed trading practices and in June won the right from the Securities and Exchange Commission to set up a new, alternative stock exchange — in competition with the NYSE and the Nasdaq — over the objections of major financial traders. Described as a “speed bump,” his Investors’ Exchange promises to level the playing field in the market for all investors by slowing down orders by a fraction of a second, removing the current advantage high-speed traders now enjoy. John Stackhouse, Senior Vice-President, Office of the CEO at RBC, is responsible for interpreting trends for the executive leadership team and board of directors with insights on how these are affecting RBC, its clients and society at large. Previously, he was editor-in-chief of The Globe and Mail (2009-14), editor of Report on Business, the newspaper’s national editor, foreign editor and its foreign correspondent based in New Delhi, India (1992-99). He has authored three books: Out of Poverty, Timbit Nation, and, most recently, Mass Disruption: Thirty Years on the Front Lines of a Media Revolution. He is a senior fellow at the C.D. Howe Institute and the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs.
