TR Talks- 2019/2020 Series Introduction: Barriers to Innovation
October 7, 2019 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Geared to an inter-professional community of clinicians researchers and trainees the series is intended to provoke discussion and community building. The Talks are intended to provide an overview of the health innovation landscape while introducing the ‘tools and competencies’ needed to systematically ‘translate’ science more effectively.
Introduction: Barriers to Innovation
Stagnant incentives structures culture accountabilities and information systems are often discussed as barriers to health innovation. How can existing barriers can be re-aligned to develop assess scale-up and spread healthcare innovations?
Funding high-impact initiatives based on measurable impacts on health outcomes to create value the spread and scale-up of promising innovations and sustain successful inventiveness seems like an obvious innovation strategy. What are the barriers to funding systematic translational research and how can we develop mechanisms that support systematic and value-driven translational?
Translating Clinical Insights
Clinical insights with measurable impacts for improved health outcomes are not always spread scaled or adopted into best practices in timely and efficient ways. What are the barriers to deploying clinical insights efficiently and what strategies can be used to improve uptake of health innovations?
Sometimes seen as antiquated and counter-innovation in some sectors intellectual property systems are extremely significant to health science innovation. What should you know about IP to protect your hospital and academic contributions while supporting favorable opportunities for their commercialization?
Implementation in Clinics and Community
Collaborative integrated multi-sectoral and interprofessional value-based care delivery service models based on precision medicine are the magic bullet that will save our healthcare system and it will be done in the comfort of your own home. Care is moving from the centralized hospital structure to the decentralized community model the only question is how?
Roles of Patients in Research
The benefits and value of patient engagement and empowerment are continually touted as a research imperative. Can patient engagement translate to patient advocacy that can improve research? How? And what does meaningful patient engagement look like?
Failures and Frontiers in TR
Do [animal] models still matter? Institutions are decreasing their investment in animal facilities in the face of new technologies and continue questioning the translatability of findings in animal testing. More and more institutions are taking a more ethical route. So why are these models still being used? What will replace animal testing?
